Booze Charity?

This morning I came upon "Jerry", an Air Force veteran who is confined to a wheelchair. He is homeless.

"How are you doing today Jerry?"

"I'm trying to get enough quarters to do my laundry", he replied in his soft, weak voice.

So I gave him the only quarter I had (the rest of my coins were other denominations). A little while later, I ran across him again sitting in the park with one of his other friends. I asked him how his quarter hunt was going, and he shook his head mournfully. The look in his eyes damned society for its disregard of his penury.

"How many loads do you have?"

He pointed at two puny plastic bags and informed me, "Two. One there, and one there. I hate to mix whites with colors". Truthfully, I saw only two dingy shades of gray when I compared the hues.

"Well, how much is it gonna cost to get it all done?" Mind, I knew exactly how much it would cost.

"Oh, about five dollars I guess".

That's just about the price of a pint of cheap vodka at the liquor store which adjoins the laundromat. Vodka, it happens, is Jerry's medication of choice. So, although I could have afforded to give him what he claimed he needed, could also have wheeled him to the laundromat and even helped him with his laundry, I simply gave him a dollar more in change. He could make his own decisions about how to spend it.

Immediately after that, I encountered a couple named Mark and Alisse. Mark is also a wheelchair confined veteran. He had suffered a minor siezure earlier in the day, and was in pain from back spasms. He also had a classic case of the alcoholic shakes. They were waiting for Alisse's brother to pick them up and take them to the local hospital so that Mark could receive treatment for his pain. Taking pity, I bought him a large malt liquor to quiet his shakes without thinking twice about it.

The only difference between these two incidents is that Jerry was trying to "game" me, whereas Mark was completely honest about his needs.

Did I do right or wrong?
